Don't just Tweet Random stuff, Tweet Quality Tweets. Don't just Tweet your (site-related) tweets, promote other quality content you find on Internet. Don't OverTweet (Oh..Yes, This might be a problem).
ReTweeting
Re-tweeting is good. Don't Just retweet stuff as it is. Try to change the wordings (Optional, to make it more interesting)
Re Tweeting Your Own (Older) Tweets - Reworded Tweets
Don't do it. Its Annoying. Even if you want to do it. Re word it.
Spamming
Don't Spam. Spamming especially in the world of Micro blogging is common. Did you know what more than half of Tweeters are bots (Yes, they are not human...). Many Tweeters think that Auto DM is another way of spamming. I don't think it is a problem to Auto DM, unless you are promoting spam related stuff like free credit report, play games free...etc.
And Always Remember that it is the "Quality" that matters, not Quantity
Don't worry too much on Twitter Follower growth. You will get followers eventually. These tips are just like an arrow sign - It shows you what way to go, It doesn't tell you about how fast you will get to your goal.
Automatic Followers
Do not ever use an automatic follower features provided by websites like Twiends. It may gain you some followers, but most of these websites are follower exchange program-based. So what ? The problem is that you may follow someone you have not intended to (Remember that most of Twitter Users are Bots). These bots may be a serious problem when your follower (Actual one, not through automatic) follows them.
So What to Do ?
Be patient. Wait for it. You will get followers naturally. Patience is a virtue.
